Today was the day. The day I've dreaded. The day we had to get rid of Claire's paci. I've been dreading this day for a long time, as Claire has had a love affair with her paci from day one. A little after she turned one, we limited paci time to naps and bedtime only, but now that she's two, we decided it was time to be done with it once and for all... especially since she started to chew through them about a month ago. One by one we've been throwing them away when she chews them. She has had one beloved paci left (her Bella paci, as she called it... yes, my child named her pacis... we went through circle paci, birdie paci, kitty paci, herky paci, and now the beloved bella paci named after her friend Isabella) for a few weeks now. I noticed that there was the teeniest tiniest little slit in it a few days ago and realized that it was time to take action.
So, knowing it was going to be painful, we tried to make it as fun as possible. After church today, we wrote a letter to the Paci Fairy and asked her to take Claire's paci in exchange for a gift. We talked about how the Paci Fairy could fix Claire's broken paci and bring it to a new baby who needs it. Claire liked that idea and decided that baby Evy needs it. So we asked the Paci Fairy to bring it to baby Evy in Africa (who is hardly a baby anymore and doesn't even use a paci....).
Claire took a few final sucks....
And we put the letter and her paci in a basket.
Then it was naptime.... Let's just say I HAVE NEVER heard Claire scream like that in. her. life. We did everything we could think of to try to calm her down and when we realized nothing was going to work, we just said goodnight and left her. The screaming lasted 30 minutes and then she fell asleep (after both wetting the bed and throwing up from crying so hard!!). She only slept about 30 minutes instead of her usual 2 hours, but at least she slept. That's success in my book!
When she got up from her nap, we told her the Paci Fairy had come to visit. She left Claire a letter and a brand new baby!
Claire was thrilled!
The true test will be bedtime and I know the next few nights will not be great, but at least we are on our way! I admit, it's a little sad for me, knowing that my little girl is growing up so fast. This was one of the last things about Claire that made her still seem like a baby to me. *Sigh*
