Uncool Home Invaders

After a morning of unwanted home invaders (of the animal/insect sort), I was reflecting on all the adventures of freaky living things in our houses we have had.  It may finally be time to tell the story.

These first two I can blame on our beloved sometimes loved cat Sadie.  This afternoon Sadie comes walking into the playroom with a lizard in her mouth.  She proceeded to chase it around the playroom, bite off it's tail, eat the tail, and then leave the rest of lizard body in said playroom.  Luckily, in the middle of the adventure my friend stopped by to pick up Claire for an afternoon playdate.  I told her the drama and she bravely captured the lizard and threw him back outside.  Brave friend left and I walked out into the garage to get something.  What do I find in the garage? A dead bird.  SAAAADIE!!!!!

Fast forward a couple hours... we have a cat door that goes from our garage into our house so Sadie can get into the house from the garage.  I hear her come in and a few minutes later she walks into the living room with the DEAD BIRD FROM THE GARAGE IN HER MOUTH!! I screamed and she ran away into the playroom.  I looked in the playroom and she's casually laying on the floor in the playroom, batting around the dead bird next to her.  I was afraid she was going to bite it's head off or something so I grabbed Emma and ran outside to see if my next door neighbor could rescue us.  He wasn't home, my friend's hubby who sometimes works from home wasn't home, so Emma and I just sat outside devising a plan.  After a few minutes, our 12 year old animal loving neighbor gets off the bus.  She usually stops by if she sees us outside to say hi to the girls and today was no different.  As she walked over I said, "So, we have crisis."

Neighbor girl: what happened?
Me: Sadie brought a dead bird in our house!
N: oh! Want me to get it out??
M: really?? YES.
N: I need a plastic bag. (Proceeds to pick the bird up with the bag) Ohhh, poor birdie.  He's soooo cute.  A yellow tailed warbler! This is a protected species you know.
M: Wow.
N: His insides haven't hardened yet so he hasn't been dead long.  (Continues to give me science lesson on what happens to the bird's internal organs post death)
M: you know so much about animals! Thanks for the science lesson! So what should we do with the bird? Throw him in the bushes?
N: I think I'll bring him home to show my brother.  I might pluck a few tail feathers and put them in hat.
M: Well thank you for rescuing us!!! Hero of the day!
N: Anytime.  I can get any kind of insect or animal out of the house for you anytime.
M: I'm glad my 12 year old neighbor saved us!!

Also upon moving to Georgia, we have unfortunately come to know the oh-so-common-in-the-South cockroach.  One morning I opened our backdoor to let Sadie outside (obviously a bad idea all around) and a giant, at least two inches long, FLYING cockroach fell into our kitchen.  The girls and I screamed and ran.  I found a big heavy children's bible (sorry Lord) and chucked it at the roach.  We left it there all day until Justin got home and had to take care of the situation.

Let's back up several years to when we had purchased our first house in Chattanooga, TN.  You know what I found hanging out in our kitchen one morning when I came down to get my coffee?  A scorpion!  A big, black, freaking scorpion.  I was so traumatized that I honestly do not remember what we did or how we got that thing out of the house.

Ready for the worst one?  This one is still somewhat fresh in my mind so it has taken awhile to get over.  When we lived in Iowa, we I found snakes in our basement on three different occasions! Two of these horribly traumatizing times happened when Justin was out of town for work.  How's that for a way to meet new neighbors?  "Hi, we've lived across the street from you for three years and never met.  I'm Annie, my husband is out of town, and we have a snake in our basement.  HELP!" Yes, that happened with two different neighbors during snake invasions.  The last time it happened Justin was home so he finally got to rescue us.

So, let's see... lizard, cockroach, scorpion, dead bird, snake... YIKES!  Let's hope we don't add anything new to our repertoire.

Nana & Papa

Nana and Papa came to town a few weeks ago!  We had a great visit and enjoyed showing them around our new home and town.  They also took on super awesome status by allowing us to get away for two nights for our anniversary while they watched the girls.  You're the bomb, Nana & Papa!! :)

Justin was able to take a couple of days off of work while they were here, so did some fun things like go out to lunch and mini golf!

Because they've spent many many many hours helping us with home projects in the past and watching the girls for two days was enough to ask, we tried our best to let them relax and not have to work too hard!  We did, however, enlist Papa's help to put together this new swingset we got.  It sure made these two girls very happy!

Thanks for a great visit and for taking the time to come and see us!! :)

Emma's 3 yr stats

Emma had her three year appointment with her doctor this past week.  One of my favorite parts of these appointments is to find out how much they've grown since last time!  I'm also so glad I've blogged this info in this past, because it makes comparing the girls' sizes so much easier.

Emma weighed in at 33 1/2 lbs (75th %) and was 38 1/2 inches tall (97th %).  She's a tiny bit shorter and a lot smaller than Claire was at this age!

She was very curious at the appointment and had lots of questions of her own to discuss with the doc!  She didn't like the finger prick but other than that, the appointment was poke and shot free!

Partying with the Bday Girl

We had fun celebrating our big three year old last weekend!  We told her she could pick a place to eat after church on Sunday.. Waffle House!  This girl has been in love with waffles since she was one and this is the second year in a row she has picked Waffle House for her birthday meal.  Hey, we're not complaining!  What's not to love about yummy and cheap??

After brunch, we got to work on her cupcakes.  After days months of deliberation, Emma decided on a rainbow theme for her birthday.  Totally perfect, since Claire also had a rainbow 3rd birthday.  I decided to scale things down a bit and not attempt the rainbow cake like we did for Claire's 3rd birthday.

Instead we did these rainbow/tie dye cupcakes.

Even though we are far from family and friends, they didn't disappoint with the number of presents and packages she got in the mail!  I She felt so special and loved!  ;)

She insisted on wearing her fairy dress from Grammy and Babu the minute she opened it.  She then proceeded to turn Claire into a frog.

The morning of her actual birthday, we invited of few of her friends and their mamas over for some birthday fun!

There was coloring and dancing and leotards and eating!  My girls just can't get through any sort of gathering without breaking into a dance party.  Thank goodness the boys were all good sports!  ;)

Baby Shoe.. third edition

We did it!  We made it through the ultrasound without finding out Baby Shoe's gender.  It really is a miracle!  Everything looked great and it was super fun watching baby move and squirm and yawn and wiggle.

Only 19 more weeks until we get to meet this little love and find out who it is!

Halfway Baby!

I can't believe we are already halfway through this pregnancy!  Time flies when you're having fun.  ;)  I'm officially 20 weeks and today is the big ultrasound.  Thanks for all your advice and responses to this post.  We have decided we're definitely going to go for the surprise... as long as we can make it through the ultrasound without changing our minds!!

Here's a picture of me at 20 weeks...
20wks

This pregnancy has been pretty good so far!  The first trimester was rough.. not because of sickness but because of sheer exhaustion.  I was completely and totally wiped by noon every day.  After an afternoon nap, I was usually good for the rest of the day but I was going to bed super early too.  I didn't have much nausea to speak of (sorry sicky preggo friends) and never got sick.  I did, however, pack on more pounds than they recommend for the first tri... but hey, instead of puking my guts out, I was constantly eating!

The second trimester has been great so far!  Other than my weekly progesterone shots which leave me with a stingy, burning, and sore bootie for a couple of days, it's been pretty good.  I can make it through a day without a nap and have even managed to clean my house a couple of times... and that, folks, is progress.  I've been feeling the baby move since about 17 weeks.  I love this stage of pregnancy... when you are constantly reminded of the little life inside by jabs and kicks and turns.. so fun!

Here are some progress shots from earlier on...

Looking forward to seeing our little babe on ultrasound in a few hours!

Dear Emma

Dear 3 year old Emma,

Today is your 3rd birthday!  Three years ago, almost to the minute, we welcomed you into the world.  I was so overcome with love the minute I held you... and not much has changed.  I hope and pray that one day you get to experience being a mother.  It's unlike anything else I've ever experienced and being your mama has taught me so much.  I want that experience for you, too.

You are the most dramatic, adventurous, naughty, funny, and loving girl.  I love how your personality includes so many different traits.  You can be such a rough little tom boy sometimes - you are a dare devil at the park, you love riding your bike, you like playing with Diego and cars, and you are brave.  You can also be quite a naughty thing, too!  You are my child who draws on the walls and carpet, overflows the bathroom sink, rips pages out of library books (shh!  don't tell on us!), throws smoothies all over the car, and runs away from me in stores.  At the same time, you are the most loving little girl.  You've always been, and still are, a mama's girl.  You love to be held and snuggled.  You give the best hugs and say the sweetest things.  You feel such remorse when you make bad choices and often are the one to tell me what you did wrong before I even find out!  You love being read to and looking at books.  You love your blankey and refuse to sleep without it. You love your dolls and and the color pink and doing puzzles.  You are completely your own person even though you adore your Sissy.

Oh, sweet child, how I want you to someday grasp how deep and wide the Father's love for you is!  I pray that you will understand His great sacrifice and respond with your life.  You are such a unique child of God and I love that He made you just the way He wanted you to be...for His purposes and to bring glory to His name.

Thank you for helping your mama experience and understand grace more each day.  Being your mama has reminded me again that without God's help, I am not capable of loving and parenting you.  I'm so thankful He never leaves us.  You remind me everyday of the simple joys in life and I pray for the patience to enjoy them with you more.

You are a joy, sweet girl.

I love you,

Mama

Cheers to 10 years!

10 years!  In some ways, it seems like it was just yesterday that we said, 'I do' but in others, it feels like we've always been together.

We've lived a lot of life and adventure in these ten years and we've gotten pretty good at adjusting to new circumstances.  It seems like we're always the 'new' people in every situation we are in!  Hey, at least it keeps life interesting!  God has been so faithful and I'm so thankful that His promises are true.  There have been many ups and downs along the way but I just can't imagine living life with anyone else.

We got to reflect and celebrate our anniversary with a two night getaway to Savannah.  (thank you Nana and Papa! more on that later..) It's amazing how refreshing it is to get away.. even just for a couple nights!

Ready for some fun!

Savannah is so beautiful!  Despite the 105 degree heat index, which was super rough for this preggo, we had fun exploring the city, eating good food, enjoying our bed & breakfast, and touring some historical places.

I *almost* passed out as we were touring one house but thankfully I found a chair in time and got some water... I'll blame it on pregnancy & super hot temperatures!

image (87)

We toured the city in style.. on this sweet carriage ride!  I've always wanted to go on one so it was fun to actually get to.

Someone even asked if we were on our honeymoon!  :)  Such a fun time of celebrating!

Tiny Dancer

Claire just finished a ballet/tap dance class at our local rec center.  So fun watching this tiny dancer learn new things and have so much fun in the process!
