The Cabin

We had an awesome weekend at my aunt and uncle's cabin in northern Wisconsin. This is the place I've vacationed almost every summer since I was little, so it was so fun to bring Claire there for the first time. Justin's first experience there was last fall.
We went with my cousin Sam and his wife Christina. We can't say enough how much we LOVE being with them... I think every time we are together we talk about how we wish we lived closer. They are some of our favorite people! :)

Claire's first boat ride... she loved it!

The colors were beautiful!!

We ate lots of yummy food and had great conversation and time to relax. Sounds like the perfect weekend, doesn't it? Well, it almost was. Enter Claire and her terrible cold.... So, she and I both had a cold all week before the trip. Nothing too serious, just kind of annoying. Well, the second night we were there, Claire woke up with an AWFUL sounding cough. Thank the Lord that Christina is a pediatric nurse practitioner because if she hadn't have been there, I would have been scared. Right away she said, "Annie, I think she has croup." The more she heard her cough, the more convinced she was. I took her outside because Christina said the cool air would help. It did so we put her back to bed. She woke up just 20 minutes later with the same cough. We knew that this was going to be a long night so we decided to take her the the ER. They gave her some medicine for the croup and sent us on our way. She did pretty well the rest of that night.
The next day Claire was out of sorts. Her naps were short, she was crabby, and I was tired. We made it through the day and even enjoyed ourselves, regardless of Claire's uber-fussiness. We took off Sunday morning to head home and Claire did a great job in the car. We were just a couple of hours from home and decided to stop for a bathroom break. We got back in the car and had been driving for just a few minutes when I heard what sounded like Claire spitting up. I checked and sure enough, saw she had. As soon as I started to wipe it up, I noticed that unmistakable vomit smell. (Spit-up doesn't smell like that at all.) Before I could even finish saying, "It smells like throw up," Claire started vomiting everywhere. Here we are, driving down the highway, Claire throwing up in her carseat... It's now all over her, her clothes, the carseat, her toys... everything! We pulled over and somehow managed to take off her vomity clothes and clean up the best we could. The last couple hours of our drive home were not so fun - vomit smell filling the air.... yuck! She didn't have any other episodes and we're pretty sure it was just caused by the congestion in her throat.
Justin and I high-fived each other after making it through that. We also noted that this most definitely won't be the last time a trip goes differently than we had anticipated or that we find ourselves cleaning puke from the car. Oh, parethood!! :)

Oh man, the puke clean-ups. Not my favorite part of parenting!! In the car, too, that is bad! Well, I'm glad you made it home without any more ER drama and I hope Claire is feeling better now that she is home. Poor little girl, what a trooper!

The fall colors up at the cabin look beautiful, looks cold though! Hope we can hang out soon, you guys have been so busy, we miss you, haha!

Jealous of everything but the barf. I can't say Susan and I have ever high-fived after a puke sessions, but maybe we should have.

Oh, croup is so scary. Our first experience landed us in the ER too. I'm so sorry Claire wasn't feeling well. It looks like you had a good trip despite it.
The picture of you and Claire on the boat is so cute.

Oh Annie! I'm so sorry that Claire got sick in the car, yuck! Sounds like she was swallowing a lot of mucus though. We also had such a great time with you guys and would love to come visit you in IA again sometime soon or have you out here. Sam and I always love the opportunity to share time with you and Justin and now Claire; definitely a special friendship we have...agree'd - we still wish we lived closer!

Oh ickers. Yes, I've had experiences already (as a child) with puke in the car. NO FUN! My family ended up buying an air freshener at a gas station to try to help with the smell but it ended up smelling like vanilla-vomit :) Glad to see and hear you made it through ok!
