Fasting

I'm a pretty huge fan of Jen Hatmaker... I mean, I felt like I was meeting a movie star when I went to her conference, HUGGED her, and told her I was a huge groupie.  I remember the first  time I read her blog a couple of years ago around Christmas time.  Her writing drew me in! She's the perfect mix of hilarity and truth in her writing.

Last summer I read her book 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess.  I was drawn in from the beginning and thought it was awesome to follow her along on her journey.  She takes 7 months and 7 areas of excess, focusing on one each month.  She chooses a way to fast from each area for the month...some pretty extreme.  But this intentional fasting allows more space for her to draw near to God and to hear him speak.

Well...a few months ago my friend told me that, after reading the book, she really wanted to do the experiment for herself.  She found a group of five women who are embarking on this journey together.  We just started on Saturday.  I'm excited to see what we all learn!

This first month is food.  We are focusing on each task for 2 weeks (instead of a full month like Jen did).  During these two weeks, I will only be eating 7 foods: chicken, eggs, spinach, sweet potatoes, avocado, apples, and whole wheat bread.  I'll also only be drinking water.  We are choosing to intentionally fast from everything else and allow God to work!

I had my last cup of coffee (or 3) on Friday, and let me tell you - killer headache all weekend!!! I only drink 1-2 cups per day so I naively thought I wouldn't go through withdrawal, but dang! It was brutal.  I had a regularly scheduled coffee date with a friend at Starbucks this morning.  Oh.my.gosh.  Walking into that sweet aroma and choosing to drink water... I almost cried!!  So far, the limited food choices haven't been too difficult.  We've found lots of ways to cook chicken and make sweet potatoes.  Plus,  I love avocado! I'm curious to see when that will get more difficult, as I'm sure it will.

Praying that I will realize how insanely blessed I am to live where I do with endless food choices, while others all over the world would kill for a taste of my 7 foods everyday. Even for just one of my foods.  Lord, break my heart for what breaks yours!

As Jen prayed in her book, "Jesus, more of you and your kingdom and less of me and my junk!!"

Yay! I so wanted some peeps to do this with- but being pregnant and limiting my food choices would be hard right now, could do the others though. Excited to hear how this goes for you!

So excited to hear what God teaches you! Just curious though, is your family on board or are you cooking other foods for them?

Jenny, Justin is participating! The girls are eating the dinners I cook for the most part but I'm making them their normal breakfast & lunches.
