I have had SO many people ask me, "How in the world did Emma get meningitis?!" I asked the doctor the exact same thing! Her explanation totally makes sense so I thought I'd share for all of the inquiring minds out there.
The day Emma was admitted into the hospital, Claire ended up getting sick with what seemed like the stomach flu - throwing up and a fever. The doctor suspects that Claire and Emma actually had the same virus and apparently this virus has been going around like crazy. She said that in newborns, the barrier between the blood and the brain is not fully developed so when Emma got the virus Claire had, it went from her blood stream into her brain (or spinal fluid or something...) and caused viral meningitis. So, it was all because of some little virus! It really makes me rethink taking my kids out everywhere and makes me really worried about germs. Who knew just a little virus could cause a baby to get meningitis and spend 2 days in the hospital?!
So... if I ask you to wash your hands before holding Emma, don't be offended. :) I'm just going to be a germaphob until she starts getting her vaccines!!

very very weird. i seriously have heard of very few babies getting viruses anyway. just glad you are at home and everyone is doing a little better!
how fast did claire recover? we just got over some vomiting/fever issues with georgia.

You go right ahead and pour that hand sanitizer on everyone's hands, Annie! Protect your babies! I am so glad Emma is doing better. So scary to have a sick baby.
